Please Join VETERAN’S HEART Georgia and LPCA-GA as we widen our lens and adjust our focus to include all that are affected by an individual’s military service.

Tremendous amounts of concern, effort and resources are directed towards helping “The Veteran” adjust to the transition home from war and military service. But despite research indicating that social engagement and support from one’s closest relationships have a profound influence on healing from the visible and invisible wounds of war, families and others connected to our service personnel may receive less attention, information and support and often feel left to their own devices to find help.

VETERANS AND FAMILIES UNDER FIRE:

Clinical and Ethical Practices for Treating the Effects of War

On Friday September 9, 2011 (nearly 10 years to the day from the impetus for our country’s longest war), Dr. Blaine Everson*, co-author of Families Under Fire, will lead us in an exploration of a Family Systems-based approach to working with our veterans, their families, and others with whom they are connected.

Some of our objectives and goals for this workshop include:

gaining a deeper understanding of how military culture and language impact individual and relational problems experienced by veterans and their family members seen in clinical practice, and recognition that this understanding is necessary for ethical practice.
developing a thorough understanding of the ethics associated with assessing, evaluating, and treating veterans and their families from a systemic perspective
enhancing our work through utilizing knowledge of in-depth ethical approaches to therapeutic conversations and interventions with military veterans and family members in a way that balances the sometimes divergent needs of the service member with those of their families.
A lunchtime panel discussion and dialogue with veterans of military service, and military family members will allow us to broaden our perspective and approach to working with those who have guarded and protected us and their families who have also uniquely served.

Heart of Georgia Hospice is a non-profit Hospice provider that has been serving the Middle Georgia area for over 26 years. We exist to provide quality end-of-life services to our patients, their families and the community at large, promoting dignity and respect.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduate of a Master's program in social work (LMSW) accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and licensed/certified by the state.
2.   One year experience as a social worker. Previous hospice or homecare experience preferred.
3.   Knowledge of the process of death, dying and bereavement.
4.   Licensed driver with good driving record and unlimited access to reliable automobile. Ability to travel per job requirements.
5. Schedule flexibility and availability. (Will be "on call" occasionally)
6. Must possess strong communication skills, to include the ability to facilitate grief support group for adults and children.

Job Description:
This person will provide individual counseling and crisis intervention for our patients and families during their most difficult time. Must act as an advocate for patients and families as needed and also assist at times with advance directives, assessing available community resources, etc. Assesses the needs of the patient/family unit, evaluates the family's coping skills, and makes recommendations to the Interdisciplinary Team for necessary interventions. Is supportive to the patient/family throughout active hospice and follows the case for minimum of thirteen months of bereavement after the death of the patient. Leads and facilitates our grief support group as well as our annual "Camp WINGS", a camp for children who have lost a loved one.

Kenneth V. Hardy is a Professor of Family Therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA and is the Director of the Eikenberg Institute for Relationships in New York City. He is an internationally recognized clinician, author, educator, and consultant. An engaging workshop leader, Dr. Hardy presents workshops nationally and internationally on family therapy with oppressed populations.

Dr. Hardy is a fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and is the 2005 recipient of the American Family Therapy Academy’s Distinguished Contributions to Social Justice Award for his groundbreaking work in the areas of family, diversity, and social justice. He is also the recipient of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC) Distinguished Contribution to Marriage and Family Counseling Award. Dr. Hardy is a frequent presenter of conferences on the topics of diversity and oppression and has published prolifically. He is co-author several books. In addition to his publications, he is also featured several therapy videotapes as well as a documentary devoted to slavery. His videotape “The Psychological Residuals of Slavery” has been well received by both professional and lay communities for serving as a catalyst to promote conversations about race relationships.

This workshop will review the dynamics of the racial oppression and will examine the features of an orientation toward survival. Specific attention will focus on studying the unique developmental tasks children and families of color must negotiate to ensure their survival within a racially oppressive environment. Workshop participants will learn how to distinguish developmentally appropriate behaviors from those that are cause of concern. Pitfalls that undermine effective therapy with children of color and their families will be explored and specific clinical strategies will be explicated, particularly those that involve working effectively with the unique developmental tasks children and families must negotiate to survive against the odds.

LMSW/LCSW Alert: Licensure Rule Change
Effective THIS licensure cycle the Composite Board has changed the Rules related to Continuing Education deadlines.

Georgia LMSWs and LCSWs must complete their continuing education (CE) hours before renewing their license to practice unless the license was granted after October 1, 2009. CE Hours are to be obtained during the two year licensure period prior to the expiration date of the license. The deadline for completing your CE hours this year is September 30, 2010. All licenses expire on September 30 of each even numbered year. The rule change removes the prior early deadline to submit CE hours (completed by June 30 of each even numbered year). The earlier deadline had been in place to encourage all licensees to submit their CE hours early. Now that the deadline has been changed to September 30, those waiting to renew until September of this year, may be in jeopardy of practicing without a license.

How could this happen? If you wait until September to renew your license and are randomly chosen for an audit, your license will be placed in a “pending” status on October 1, until verification of your CE hours is completed by the Board. Social workers who renew earlier may find their license in a “pending’’ status, should questions about any documentation of CE arise. Your license will remain in “pending” status until all issues have been resolved. A license which is in “pending” status is not an active license to practice in GA.

You are encouraged by your NASW-GA Board of Directors and staff to renew as early as you can do so. The Secretary of State has opened the renewal function on the website!

Paul Gallant, Ph.D., LMFT, LCSW

Paul Gallant has been learning, practicing and teaching the skills of Narrative Therapy since 1987. He has integrated ideas and practices from postmodern therapies with the family systems training he received while receiving his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University in 1988.

Paul is Associate Professor in the Department of Family Therapy in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is Coordinator of the Consortium for Narrative Research and Practice at NSU. He taught at Lakehead University, The University of Georgia, Florida International University, Valdosta State University and in the Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy Program, Adrian Dominican School of Education of Barry University.

His present research involves narrative supervision and the evidence-based practice of narrative therapy. With over 30 years direct practice experience with young people, adults, couples and families, he continues to offer workshops and training in narrative ideas in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Colombia.

In this workshop you will be offered ideas for how to “go on” in your work with your most challenging clinical situations.

This workshop will present the artful, playful and respectful use of metaphor (‘growing up vs. growing down”, “applying one’s strength”, “hospitality’) and other problem-undermining strategies and skills. A practical map for engaging in therapeutic conversation with children, adolescents and young adults will be offered.

Dr. Gallant will show videotaped examples of applying Narrative Therapy principles in working with children and with young women struggling with damaged identities, hopelessness and other effects from traumatic experiences in their lives. The skills of externalizing the problem, scaffolding, and rich story development will be demonstrated and explored.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Mercer University School of Medicine and Department o Psychiatry. The Mercer University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCMEA to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Marriage and Family Therapy Program of Mercer University School of Medicine is a recognized provider of Core CE credits for Marriage and Family Therapists and related hours for professional counselors and social workers.

The program is approved for a total of 7.5 hours of Core CE credits for MFTs and 7.5 hours of related CE credits for LCSWs and LPCs.

Qualifications: - Must have reached a minimum educational level of Master’s degree with a valid license to practice in the state of Georgia.

Experience: - Must possess minimally 4 years progressively responsible experience. Demonstrated knowledge of office procedure and protocols as well as various office equipment including personal computers, fax machines and multi-line telephone systems. Must demonstrate excellent communication and organization skills. Work requires three months orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with policies and procedures within assigned area. Must be able to provide a clean seven (7) years driving history/record.

Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills: - Supervises the Mobile Crisis Team activities. Assures that staff coverage is available on all shifts, provides clinical supervision and monitoring of activities. May provide direct services covering for staff as needed. Assures that staff responds to calls in a timely way and provides adequate follow-up and coordination of care. May be required to drive company vehicle, if necessary. Supervises the operation of the team during routine and emergency conditions. Ensures that documentation and follow-up are done in a timely manner. Monitors and ensures that the team has adequate staffing and communication with one another and the Call Center staff. Maintains a consistent, high-quality, customer focused orientation towards individuals, the general public and other external customers. Coordinates activities with the Lead Security Officer to ensure the safety of the team, individuals and the general public. Assists in the management of personnel by participating in interviewing potential applicants, orientation and identification of training needs for staff. Assists in the preparation of reports detailing the on-going activities of the Mobile Crisis Team to determine the on-going and future needs of the program. Maintains license as required. Following State and Federal laws and regulations, operates and monitors transport vehicle, if needed. Other duties as assigned.

Caregiving Event, opportunity to have booths for your service, October 30

Houston Healthcare along with several other agencies is hosting a workshop to support and provide education for persons caring for others with disabilities. The workshop targets caregivers and is called The Amazing Pace.

The workshop will be on October 30 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robins.

Part of the agenda will include a panel of professionals who will discuss their agency information and then answer questions.

The panel is going to include:
Julie Hall- Middle Georgia Regional Development Center
Area Agency on Aging-Georgia Cares Program- discuss this program and services
Tim Quigley- Social Security Administration- discuss social security for persons with disabilities
Joe Claxton- Mercer University School of Law- discuss laws relating to persons with disabilities
Houston County Sheriff's Department: Discuss ways parents can control a child with disabilities that has become stronger than they are, or keeping persons with disabilities from committing petty crimes, what the Sheriff's Department will do if a person with disabilities is arrested

We will also have a panel of parents as well as other speakers.
The workshop will also include booths with information to target caregivers of persons with any type of disability. The booths need to share local resources for persons with disabilities. If you would like to provide information on resources, please let me or Thaina Brown-Brake know as soon as possible.

Hello Everyone,

This is a subject that is very dear to my heart so please read further...

For the past year I have been going every Friday to the Dripdrop Cafe in Warner Robins, one of the few venues that would let me even walk in the doors, as an instrumental guitarist and unknown act. This venue and the support of Cassandra Crosby(owner) has helped me gain experience and shape me into a performer.

Her shop not only offers live music but supports a bunch of things that drive a community. The Dripdrop provides a safe non-smoking environment for people of all ages, and is the only under age venue in the area.

It is a joy for me to go and perform at her space, gain experience and open minds to my style of music. And I really hate to see it go, so I am helping with the fight to keep it open, meaning we are putting on a benefit show for the Dripdrop to stay open.

Time is of the essence here and we just have determined our venue--- so I hope you will come out and support this cause and see and hear some great music from some well known folks as well as some kids that get to play the shop.

If you can't make it or may know someone in the area, please pass this email along. We have little time to promote and again, time is not on our side.

The Dripdrop Cafe has been experienceing difficulties due to the closing of a gate on the Air Force Base. This has nothing to do with bad business at all. The gate was closed for several months and three other businesses went under during that time that live on lunch crowds... The gate has reopened but we need that extra push... and without it, the doors WILL most likely close.

This is an urgent matter as to why we are moving in such short time...

Please help keep this space for MUSIC, CULTURE AND DIVERSITY open, this is an UNCONDITIONAL venue who opens it's arms to ALL people and GROUPS. A true meaning of what community is and should be. One of the points I wish to stress is the multigenerational audience, how often do you see teens hanging out with 40,50,60+ at a live music show and actually communicating with each other?

The next DHR Board Meeting will be held on March 21.

The Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases
(MHDDAD) Committee of the Board of Human Resources will meet the on
March 21 from 10:00 a.m. to noon on the 22nd floor at 2 Peachtree
Street, room 270. The DHR MHDDAD Committee meetings are open to the
public.

The monthly meetings of the DHR Board of Human Resources are open to
the public. Meetings begin at 1:00 p.m. and are normally held in room
250 on the 29th floor of the Georgia Department of Human Resources
central offices at 2 Peachtree Street, Atlanta.

If you would like to attend the DHR MHDDAD meeting prior to the MH
Advocates meeting, there is a nice cafeteria on the 2nd floor were you
can have lunch between meetings.

Easter in the Park Announcement

Hello Everyone!!

Please forward this email to anyone that might be interested in having a Service Provider booth at our Easter in the Park Event this year.

The event is planned for Saturday, March 31st. This is the week before Easter so we hope that will make it easier for your group to participate this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Please note we are requesting each table have a game or activity for the children to play or do with a prize or gift from your organization. This does two things, it gets the parents to your table and it allows some more fun for the children. Please call me if you would like to do a different activity. Last year we estimated we had over 1400 people at Easter in the Park.

Today , February 26, Liz Bell-Willis will adress the monthly meeting of NAMI-Central Ga. on "Depression." In any given year 13 to 14 million Americans suffer from clinical depression. It is the leading cause of disability among women. Ms. Bell-Willis is a registered nurse with 21 years of experience in psychiatric nursing. Georgia Crisis & Access Line

In July 2006, the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) introduced the
Georgia Crisis & Access Line, a new statewide hotline designed to streamline
24/7 access to mental health, developmental disabilities, substance abuse
and behavioral healthcare crisis services. Georgia DHR awarded the service
to Atlanta-based Behavioral Health Link (BHL), a division of Integrated
Health Resources, LLC.

The goal of the Georgia Crisis & Access Line is to promote friendly and easy
access to services throughout the state's 159 counties. 1-800-715-GCAL is
available day or night in time of crisis and to assist with routine access
to services.

1-800-715-GCAL (4225) is staffed by trained and caring professionals who are
available around the clock. The confidential service is free to the public.
There is also a provider and resource database online at mygcal.com to help
with information about service options.

Houston Co Community Outreach Service Center Women and Children's Homeless Shelter

Good News! The official opening date for the Community Outreach Service Center Women and Children's Shelter has now been set. We will begin admitting clients on Thursday, February 22, 2007. All women admitted into the shelter must have been Houston County residents at the time they became homeless, they must have 2 forms of identification (one of which must be a picture I.D.) and they must meet the HUD definition of homeless (i.e. sleeping in place(s) not meant for human habitation, currently living in a shelter or transitional housing, within one week of eviction, leaving a short-stay facility such as detox center, crisis center, jail, etc. or is being discharged from such a facility and has been a resident there for more than 30 consecutive days and no subsequent residences have been identified.)

As an emergency facility, clients must understand that housing is generally limited to a period of thirty (30) days and during such time all clients must seek employment unless there is a physician's statement indicating an inability to do so. Clients will be assessed a nominal fee for their stay.

Please share this information with as many agencies and service providers in the Houston County area as possible. Also, we are in dire need of female resident assistants for nights and weekends. If anyone knows of any responsible, trustworthy candidates who might be interested in this position please ask them to contact us during the hours of 10am - 2pm at (478) 922-3195 or leave a message on our voicemail.

The Division of Public Health will match 3 cribs for every 5 purchased.
