Mindfulness: an Eight-week Introductory Course

Tuesdays starting January 27, 2015 at 7:00 PM through Tuesday, March 17, 2015

at Bare Bulb Coffee
1117 Georgia 96
Kathleen, GA 31047

This class is available to clients as well as clinicians.
There are nine hours of CEUs available over the eight week class!

The Class: Each class will consist of a time of learning about why a technique works, how to use it, and a time to practice the technique. There will be group discussion, but do note that this will be more of a class than a group therapy session.

The Book: We will be using a book entitled Mindfulness: An eight-week plan for finding peace in a frantic world by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. Purchase of the book will also enable you to download an audio version of the exercises so that you can practice at home. More information about the book and authors at http://franticworld.com/. Purchase of the book is strongly encouraged, but not required. Books can be ordered through Gottwals Books for $14.97 or via your preferred bookseller.

Cost and registration: Payment for the class is due prior to class to ensure registration. You can pay through Eventbrite or contact Jason directly. Payment is also accepted via Paypal or check, but you must FIRST coordinate with Jason to verify registration. If you register through Eventbrite, you will be charged their fee. There are a limited number of early registration tickets, so registering earlier is better.

Who can register: The class is expected to primarily be adults, but late teens may also benefit from the material presented.

Continuing Education: The class was approved for continuing education units for social workers and other allied professionals through the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. If you wish to use the class for CEUs, know that we will have two additional session of 30 minutes each at the end of class on February 17 and March 17 to discuss using the material in a clinical setting. You will receive nine (9) hours of CEUs for the class if you are in attendance for all sessions. There is an extra charge for using the class for CEUs.

Presenter: Jason is a clinical social worker and pastoral counselor at Wellston Behavioral Medicine in Warner Robins. His first encounters with meditation came out of studying contemplative and centering prayer while in seminary. Later he studied mindfulness meditation through the writings of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Daniel Siegal, and Thich Nhat Hahn, recently having the chance to hear Nhat Hahn teach first hand. He has used mindfulness techniques to assist patients with anxiety and depression in his work with adolescents and adults.

VETERAN’S HEART GEORGIA

THE GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY FOR ETHICS AND CORPORATE RESPNSIBILITY
Present
THE WARRIOR’S JOURNEY
Exploring Ethics, Morality, and Healing In Military Service and War
Friday — August 15, 2014     8:00 AM – 5:00 PM        (Registration begins at 7:30 AM.)
40 Courtland Street NE Atlanta, Georgia 30303
While most service members and veterans do not return home with mental disorders, there is a spectrum of change that affects everyone in military service. As the war comes home, it is critical to illuminate aspects of the experience of serving one’s country that contribute to these changes, and for some, lead to invisible wounding.

We invite counseling professionals, clergy, legal advisors, educators, military veterans, their families, and concerned civilians for a day-long conference to:
  • Consider descriptions and definitions regarding ethics and morality,
  • Understand the interface between post traumatic stress and the implications of neurobiology,
  • Examine the impact of Moral Injury on the individual, the family, and society,
  • Clarify the elements of prevention and healing,
  • Delineate the ethics of understanding these concepts in clinical practice.

Speakers sharing their expertise and work are:
Key features of The Warrior’s Journey will be active contribution and dialogue with participants joining small groups for discussion throughout the day, leading to deliberations and conclusions in the larger gathering.   Lunch, drinks, and snacks included.
****Register early. Discounted registration ends on August 1****

Using HIV/AIDS as a case illustration, we'll review the final rules and their application to privacy and security in the average social work practice setting.  Beyond the definition of confidentiality in the social work code of ethics, new requirements provide detail on the extent of efforts mandated to protect the confidentiality of all protected health information.
