4/13: Armour Family Therapy Lecture Series with Karl Tomm

The Thirteenth Annual Armour
Family Therapy
Lecture Series

Friday, April 13, 2012
9:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Bringing Forth Mutual
Acknowledgement and
Respect in Troubled Relationships

Featuring
Karl Tomm, MD, FRCP (C) LMCC
Mercer University School of Medicine

Dr. Karl Tomm is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary where he founded the Family Therapy Program in 1973. He is well known in the field of Family Therapy for his work in clarifying and elaborating new developments in systems theory and clinical practice. For many years he was at the forefront of a new approach to therapy that emerged from systemic, constructivist, and social constructionist ideas. This approach is collaborative rather than hierarchical and emphasizes therapeutic conversations to deconstruct problems and to co-construct healing and wellness. Dr. Tomm has organized many workshops, conferences, and seminars at the University of Calgary. He has also conducted numerous workshops throughout North America and in Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America. His articles have been published extensively in the international family therapy literature and he has been on the editorial boards of several family therapy journals. In 2006, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Family Therapy Academy.

This workshop will focus on the importance of acknowledgement, its different forms, how it can be fostered and how it contributes to the mutual respect that enables healing in a troubled relationship. In addition, participants will be introduced to two specific communication exercises that could be used to generate conditions for participants to move beyond their differences.
Workshop participants will be able to: identify multiple strategies for interrupting escalating conflict in couple relationships; distinguish three types of acknowledgement: existential, affirming, and aversive; and describe the steps involved in two communication exercises (reciprocal reflective listening and unilateral negative inquiry).

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Mercer University School of Medicine and Department of Psychiatry. The Mercer University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCMEA to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Marriage and Family Therapy Program of Mercer University School of Medicine is a recognized provider of Core CE credits for Marriage and Family Therapists and related hours for professional counselors and social workers.

Credit
Mercer University School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spends in the activity.

The program is approved for a total of 6 hours of Core CE credits for LMFTs and 6 hours of core CE credits for LCSWs and LPCs.
