Friday, November 15, 2013
Central Georgia Unit Lunch and Learn
Coliseum Medical Center - Psychiatric Unit
Time:  12noon - 1:00 pm
Title: HIPAA Requirements and Electronic Privacy Rules:  Using HIV/AIDS as a Case Example
 Topic:
Final requirements under the Omnibus HIPAA/HITECH Act are in place and required of all healthcare providers as of September 23, 2013. Using HIV/AIDS as a case illustration, we'll review the final rules and their application to privacy and security in the average social work practice setting.  Beyond the definition of confidentiality in the social work code of ethics, new requirements provide detail on the extent of efforts mandated to protect the confidentiality of all protected health information.

Looking ahead to the year 2050, population estimates suggest that one in every four individuals will be 65 years or older.  With this increased number, there are numerous issues that impact social workers practitioners.  All social workers, regardless of practice area or context, will be facing issues of an older population.  This presentation will examine aging from a person:environment perspective.  The five hour course will be divided into various sections that look at aging in a comprehensive way.  In each section, content will be provided as an overview of the issues of aging, and an activity or exercise will be included.  In addition, evidence informed practice approaches will be particularly highlighted.

Nancy P. Kropf is Professor and Director of the School of Social Work, Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Nancy’s area of research and scholarship is late life caregiving relationships, with the focus specifically on older adults as care providers.  Currently, she is the GSU lead for the Atlanta Area Geriatric Education Center comprised of Emory University (lead), Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Atlanta Regional Commission.  She was the President of the Association of Gerontology Education – Social Work (AGE – SW), and is a Fellow and Treasurer of the Gerontological Society of America.

Darren D. Moore, Ph.D. , LMFT

Description
Greetings everyone and welcome to "THE
MOORE THERAPY MOVEMENT!" Darren D. Moore,
Ph.D., LMFT, presents a workshop on Obesity and Mental
Health for clinicians, educators, human service workers,
medical professionals...for all. Obesity as a health
issue and social construct has been discussed widely in
scholarly literature. However, obesity as it relates to
mental health is not discussed as commonly. Likewise,
despite current treatment practices, obesity continues
to be on the rise and continues to diminish the quality of
life for individuals, couples and families. In this innovative
and creative workshop, Dr. Moore will explore the
topics of obesity and mental health as a social issue, a
treatment issue, and as a phenomenon. An important
element of this workshop will be on discussing the complexities
of the obesity epidemic, discussing current
practices and contemporary research and on exploring
treatments.
